My Services While you focus on technology, I take care of the user's needs.
Together we build an application that is a pleasure to work with!

expert review.

Get valuable feedback and insights
You have launched a website, app or digital service, or are about to? If you are uncertain about usability, recognizing navigation issues, or in trouble with customers, ask me to systematically analyse your prototype or product. I can proof it against usability heuristics, common standards, and brand guidelines. In addition, I can set up a user testing for a specific persona and scenario, or do a cognitive walkthrough on my own. In any case you get a detailed report with priotized feedback on ux and usability issues including recommendations how to improve things: new conceptual design ideas, better interaction design, restructuring the content, or input for a concise ui copy.

User Research.

Listen deeply to your target group
To create a product that fits the users' needs, I help you with requirement workshops, surveys, interviews, field observation, and data analysis. From my findings I create personas and scenarios, write user stories, task flows, and sketch the customer journey. You get a summary of all research results in a report that builds the base to design your app, website, or digital service accordingly. If you develop complex B2B services and or innovate new products, I do recommend collaborative and explorative activities such as Google design sprint before development is starting. When you internalize your customer's domain knowledge into your company, both of you benefit!

UX concept.

Prototyping based on user's needs
Backed up on my research findings I create (paper) mock-ups, low-fi wireframes, and high-fi interactive click dummies using AXURE, the industry standard prototyping tool. To help users get their tasks done more efficient and effective, I structure content along their business goals. To follow the expectations and habits of your user groups, all content and ui objects are in a logical order and come with a consistent design. I apply an iterative approach and evaluate and implement feedback from user testing, card-sorting, und tree-testing sessions. Doing so, I ensure continious improvement of the design to deliver a user friendly product with an intuitive navigation and interaction design.

Content & Copy.

People centric approach
Using a digital product is like a dialog between the system and the target group. As a ux writer, I design your individual brand voice with a personalized style and wording and tell compelling stories on the user interface of your online shop, webpage, or blog. I can define the terminology and help to create a controlled vocabulary. If you have already published a hugh amount of content and plan a migration or restructuring project, I can help you as a content manager to clean up the mess, report outdated or redundant information, and chaotic structures. A content inventory is a good starting point to implement a CMS, reuse topics, and define your content strategy.

Do it better - together
Discussing the point of view from different diciplines is a great chance to come up with totally new and innovative solutions. You can book me inhouse to develop your business model and minimal viable product, your digital strategy, for requirement engineering, ux/ui training, conception and prototyping. My role depends on your goals: from moderator to consultant or critical observer, from trainer to mentor or coach. Together as designers, developers, product owners, content producers, and customers, we will apply design thinking and human centered design methods - no matter if you are a start-up or a (business) organisation, building digital products or do service design!

Why do projects fail?
Sometime because of a lack in communication, missing processes, and unclear responsibilities, or because there is no shared vision or mission. Together with your team I discover workarounds, discuss pain points and wishes, and design an optimized solution. I create and implement processes and styleguides for ux/ui designers and can help your team using scrum/agile/lean methods for software development, e.g. sprint planning with user story mapping, or creating a persona matrix to balance business and user goals. I am currently discovering holacracy to empower self organized teams, working together responsible in flexible roles.

Education What I have learned so far:

User Experience Design

Design Thinking, agile and scrum had a big impact on my work since doing projects with SAP. To keep myself up to date in human centered design methods I regularly attend international conferences and workshops. A five month online training, covering the whole UX process, enabled me to design my first app TASKLY. With a personal mentor I sharpened my ability to focus on the audience, asking the right questions, and listen deeply. Prototyping and testing was crucial to create a user friendly app and to improve the visual design.

Information Design

For many years, I created software manuals, user guides, and support wikis. Those information products addressed different target groups and helped consultants, developers and key users to implement, enhance and operate complex business applications. I studied Funktionsdesign (c) at the Technical Academy Esslingen (TAE) and learned to structure and standardize complex information with help of DITA and XML. Today I can apply these techniques to define CMS modules and ux pattern libraries for apps and extensive websites.

Marketing & PR

Voluntary services in publishing companies gave me a first understanding of the media business, how to publish books, and understand layout and typography. To promote products and events, I created white papers and spread the news as a public relations manager. Later I changed the page and worked as an editor. Today I still like to create content and blog for my own and other websites, e.g. for TestingTime. My ability to communicate complex and even unpopular topics can help you to balance stakeholders interests.

Art History & Psychology, M.A.

Being fascinated by art and design, my university studies followed that path. Analyzing paintings and sculptures made me understand the effects of colors, shapes and style. My search for what makes us individuals resulted in studying cognitive and developmental psychology. I love to analyze people, explore new technologies and their impact on our life. My interest in cultures led to European Ethnology and intercultural communication. Life has so many different colors, and I worship collaboration and diversity to find creative solutions.

By Susanne / July 16, 2018

If there would be a hitlist of ux related FAQ, this might be the winner: "How to implement user experience and usability in my company, organisation, or project?" My standard answer was: "Well, it depends... on your company, customer, and context!" But in my projects I found 10 general patterns and pitfalls.

What is information architecture?!

By Susanne / March 1, 2016

On February 20, 2016, this year's World Information Architecture Day (WIAD) was celebrated in 57 locations in 28 countries – unfortunatley not in Germany. To explore the myths of information architecture (IA), I made a trip to Switzerland. Even the venue at the Toni areal (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste) was a great place to meet and discuss, the Swiss conference wasn't about real buildings. But what is IA actually about?!

Let' get visual

Let's get visual :o)

By Susanne / Feb 8, 2016

Don't be afraid to sketch your ideas! Visualising what's on your mind isn't that hard as you might think. To get started, you just need some sheet of blank paper and at least a black marker with a chisel tip and a fineliner tip. After having a lot of fun in a sketching workshop, I'd love to share a little story to show how sketching can enrich life!

But to be honest, who is that lucky?! For those who are not, working in your vacation might be an option - let's break the rules and follow me on my volunteering trip!

By Susanne / May 12, 2015
